“How are you doing?” is a kind question and a useless one. It arrives with a script attached. The script says good, busy, you know how it is, and both people move on. Nobody lied. Nothing was learned.

“Let me know if you need anything” is worse, because it hands the work to the person with the least capacity to do it. The people who most need to raise a hand are exactly the people who will not, since raising it costs standing they spent years building.

Most of the leaders I work with are relationally generous. They know their people’s names, their kids’ names, what happened over the weekend. Their staff would tell you without being asked that this person cares.

Clarity has to be consistent, not just in the hard conversations but in the daily rhythms of how you lead. The standards you reinforce in meetings. The decisions you make visibly and explain fully. The expectations you hold without exception and the ones you allow to drift.

The leaders your team trusts most aren’t the ones who know everything. They’re the ones who always deliver, and always know the difference between what they can handle and what requires someone better.
